Isn’t getting older fun? It’s not the new gray hairs that bug me. I think they actually look like very natural highlights in my light brown hair. Or the decrease in my metabolism. I’m saving a fortune on groceries now that I’m eating less!
What is upsetting me is the colonoscopy I’ll have to endure in a few weeks. Age 50 is the age at which doctors recommend this procedure. For me, it’s an even bigger necessity because my mom was diagnosed with colon cancer one year ago. Not to worry, she’s been given a clean bill of health after the surgery. But given that she also dealt with uterine cancer, I really can’t take any chances. So I met with the doctor 2 days ago to discuss what’s involved and what’s required as advance preparation for this procedure. I’ll save you the gory details except to say that it requires consuming nothing but clear liquids and a very foul tasting drink 24 hours before the operation. Essentially it’s “Liquid Plumber” for humans!
And what’s with the acne back all over again? I thought I’d dealt with more than my share of zits in my teenage years. Having them again at my age is just not fair. At this stage of my life, I expected to be purchasing Clearasil for my teenage sons not for me. People try to tell me it’s a good thing my skin is so oily because it means less wrinkles but I’m tired of buying cosmetic concealers to cover up the blemishes.
One more thing … when will my body figure out I have no intention of having any more kids? 37 years of menstrual cycles and I’m still like clockwork. Haven’t I spent enough on tampons already?
But enough of my grumblings! I’m healthy, happy and in great shape. I have more energy than people half my age. And when it comes to aging, it sure beats the alternative!

I have never gotten rid of the acne so I understand! although I wish I didn’t have any gray hairs because I have WAY to many!
At 33 I’ve been starting to think about the aging thing a bit too – a few gray hairs now, and acne that just never really left! My lower back also kinda cronically hurts (but not too bad, just requires some stretching). I broke down about five years ago and finally got glasses too (sigh). Ah well. Life changes, it happens. All in all, things are still pretty good
And as someone told me on my 30th birthday (and to echo what you said above), the only thing worse than turning 30 is not getting to turn 30…
Dear Mommycrat,
I joke about aging but I actually think life gets better as you get older. You might enjoy reading another blog article I wrote called “Happy 50th Birthday”. Here’s the link: http://karynclimans.com/2010/08/06/happy-50th-birthday-to-me/. I’m off to check out your site now. Thanks for stopping by mine!
Cheers,

I’m 37 and also enjoying acne all over again. haha. I recently blogged about it- actually I flipped it off. But today I am blogging about my crusade for smiles. Please come join me. http://weloveiowa.blogspot.com/2010/08/launching-project-smile.html
It’s interesting to have to encounter these “over 40 things,” as one of my docs puts it, but I still feel like I’m in my early 30′s. Sometimes mah brain is still stuck in junior high with the bathroom humor. Leaves me scratching my head and wondering how I got to this place where I’m experiencing things I only previsouly thought old people felt!
It’s incredible how our perception of “old” changes. I now see people in their ’70′s as young!
Ha ha ~ I can totally relate to the colonoscopy concerns!
Rest assured that I survived my colonoscopy, and in hindsight felt pretty good after being “cleansed”.
I’m terrified. I asked my doctor (jokingly) if wine counted as a clear liquid? Loved your choice of words, “hindsight”! Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I have a close friend who HAS to get a colonoscopy EVERY year because of her family history ~ yikes! I figured if she could buck up and endure/survive having it once a year, then I could get mine once every 10 years without whining about it = )
Seems like no matter how bad/difficult we think things are for us, there are always others who have it way worse!!
A friend of mine also has to have yearly colonoscopies. In fact, I driven her to and from several of her appts. But I’m still terrified! Hopefully this will be one of those experiences when I wonder afterwards what I was so worked up about?
