I Feel Guilty

I left a marketplace sale in the middle of the show. Just started packing up my stock and left! Why did I leave? I felt guilty not being at home with my family for Thanksgiving weekend. My eldest son was home for the weekend from university and I wasn’t there.

I’ve always cooked the traditional turkey dinner with my sons’ favourite stuffing and all of the fixings for Thanksgiving dinner. It’s such a special time of year … giving thanks for our family and friends! Even if I hadn’t made it home, my mother-in-law was planning to make the special dinner so that my family wouldn’t have to resort to take-out. But I wanted to be home with them too!

Problem is now I feel guilty for leaving in the middle of a show. I was supposed to stay until late Monday night – traveling back to Toronto on Tuesday morning. Now there’s a big empty booth where Tail Wags was located. I’ve never done this before. I’m a die-hard who stays every show from start to finish. I don’t even hire staff to look after my booth for me because I like to meet my customers personally. Nothing gives me more pleasure than hearing how thrilled my customers are with their purchases from previous years or helping a customer find just the right look for someone on their gift list. Sure it’s tiring but so what … happy customers equal a successful business!

Of course, I’ve ruined the chance of being invited back to that show. But, more importantly, I’ll be sitting at the dinner table with my family eating a wonderful turkey dinner tonight.

I agree with you. Family is so important, however, I’m confused. It’s not Thanksgiving yet.

    • Dear GutsyWriter,
It’s Canadian Thanksgiving! Our Thanksgiving is always at the beginning of October – I’m assuming you are American so your special day is at the end of November. No wonder you found it confusing!

Excellent choice. And an excellent reminder to all us business people to weigh family and work before making commitments. We get so wrapped up in our businesses (I am guilty as charged) that family sometimes becomes an after thought. And vice versa, sometimes family can wait. The trick is incorporate both into our decision making.

    Thanks for sharing this.
